5-Days Marangu Route

kili16The Marangu Route is also known as the “Coca Cola” or “tourist” route. It is the easiest and shortest route to the summit.5-Days Marangu Route

This is also the only route with the comforts of sleeping huts at every camp site with solar lights and comfortable beds. The huts are communal, and the bunks have a sponge mattress and pillow.

There are 60 beds at both Mandara and Kibo Huts and 120 beds at Horombo Hut. Bathrooms and running water are available at the two lower huts. Mens’ and ladies’ latrines are available at the last camp but are very basic.

All climbing groups, often from several countries around the world, share meals in dining huts providing a jovial and energetic atmosphere. Soft drinks, bottled water, and beer may be for sale at the huts. Bring small Tanzanian bills to purchase these items (prices increase with elevation).

This route is usually done in 5 days but can be done in 6 days for better acclimatization. The extra day can be spent resting at Horombo or climbing the small peak of Mawenzi.

Day 1:
Pick up at Kilimanjaro International Airport transfer at hotel Arusha or Moshi.

Day 2:
After breakfast drive to Marangu Gate with your picnic lunch box. From here you start your climbing safari u to the first hut, Mandara hut (alt.2700m) where you will have diner and spend the night. The walk takes 3-4 hours through the rainforest.
Day 3:

After breakfast ascend to Horombo hut. This walk takes 5-6 hours on the moorland, where you will have the best time to enjoy the best scenery of the mountain. You will also be able to view both peaks (Kibo and Mawenzi). Dinner and overnight on this second day is spent at Horombo Hut (alt. 3720m).

Day 4:
After breakfast, start the climb to Kibo Hut (alt. 4750m). The walk takes 5-6 hours, completing the Moorland to the alpine desert.
Continue the climb to Kibo where you will have to get prepared for the summit, ascend at the time around midnight.
Day 5:
At the time around midnight, start the hike to the summit of Kilimanjaro, which take 7 to 8 hours to reach (Uhuru Peak 5895m). After short celebration, descend to Kibo Hut for short rest. Thereafter proceed to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.
Day 6:
After breakfast descend direct to the park gate where you will catch a waiting car ready for the drive back to the hotel in Moshi. Lunch will be prepared at Mandara hut.

Note: On this program it can also be done for 6 days / 5 nights. Extra day and Night spent at Horombo Huts, a visit to the foot of Mawenzi peak for acclimatization.
